This is the Oriental medicine perspective. You can go through cosmetic procedures to alter your appearance such as surgery, injecting toxins or other substances in your face, sanding off layers of facial skin, or burning them off with a laser or dramatically peeling them with acid, but why? Why go through that if your skin can look its best because you are healthy? Acne, psoriasis, aging skin are all conditions can improve with: dietary changes, herbal prescriptions, nutritional supplements, body and facial acupuncture and physician grade topicals.

How?

Through a series of Facial Rejuvenation treatments.

What are Facial Rejuvenation treatments, how are they different than regular acupuncture treatments?

Facial Rejuvenation sessions focus on the face and the patient’s specific goals. However, in Oriental Medicine, the doctor can not treat just one aspect of the body. It is impossible. All body parts-arms-liver-small intestine and face are of the same system. Therefore to treat the face, we must treat the whole person. To reach the patient’s cosmetic goals, we must address the constitution. So, Facial Rejuvenation treatments are similar to regular acupuncture treatments in that they focus on the constitution and how disease (or in this case cosmetic issues) is manifesting in that person. They are different in that the focus is on facial appearance. To this end they are more time consuming than regular acupuncture treatments. Facial Rejuvenation treatments include facial moxabustion if necessary, a pearl powder mask, both body and facial acupuncture points and a topical treatment derived from high quality herbs specific to the patient’s skin issue.

Facial Rejuvenation treatments can:

Tone slack muscles and relax facial tension

Improve blood and lymph circulation, to nourish and clear away toxins from the face

Decrease inflammation from acne lesions and cysts

Lighten deep lines and decrease surface wrinkles

Systemic conditions that are easily helped by Facial Rejuvenation Treatments are:

Sinus congestion

Frequent colds and flues

Depression & anxiety

Poor memory

& more!

In the office, we use physician grade serums and topical products. We use one of the most expensive needle brands on the market to ensure a quality treatment, with minimal discomfort. We will also put together for you a treatment plan consisting of topical products. The line we most commonly use is Suki. Suki products are synthetic-free, face and planet friendly with echo-friendly packaging and natural organic ingredients.

How many treatments will I need?

That depends on your goals. If you want a wonderful, relaxing face treatment, come in for one. If you want an “acupuncture face-lift” then the ideal schedule is two appointments per week for 5-6 weeks. Ask about our package discounts! If you are looking to improve a systemic condition such as hormonal cystic acne or psoriasis, the time table and treatment schedule varies. It could be two weeks, it could be six months. In cases such as these, really is no way to predict a time frame before your first treatment.

So make your first appointment and experience a facial rejuvenation treatment. You may just find yourself amazed by the whole-body treatment you receive while working on cosmetic facial issues. Not to mention how good you can look without sandblasting, paralyzing nerves or injecting collagen.

I feel very fortunate to have such a wonderful patient base. My patients have written of their experience with me on YELP! and Linkedin, in addition to the testimonials listed on this site. The other day, I felt so moved upon reading this patient’s story:

Dr. Rozenn is a healer. Her approach to treatment is mindful of the individual’s unique experience–it appears to me that Dr. Rozenn practices on the principle that nobody’s suffering is shaped quite the same way as another person’s suffering. To support her patients in the discovery of who they are in relationship to the bodies they inhabit, she uses her innate sensitivity to energy as well as her detailed knowledge of Chinese Medicine to bring back the unity between the two. Dr. Rozenn is intellectual, intuitive, compassionate, professional…and I daresay ethereal. Her techniques are precise. Her evaluations and diagnostics are deliberate and thoughtful. She truly wants to know the person behind the physical person she is treating. Dr. Rozenn has been working with me for three and a half months now. She developed a treatment plan for me based not only on the physical effects of overcoming a drug addiction, but also on my life experiences, emotional states, current events in my life, and maybe most importantly, based on the energetic crisis I suffered due to trauma and subsequent weakness that created openings for negativity to enter and attach to my internal world. I have no doubt that her work is authentic and effective. I truly thought in the months after getting clean that I would never feel normal again…let alone full of the joy, clarity, and vitality I’ve reclaimed in light of the healing process.–E.B. Santa Cruz

Chinese Medical theory holds that the body is not separate from the mind. Thus, emotional and psychological pain is treated no differently than physical pain. Prolonged physical pain can make someone depressed, while emotional turmoil can manifest physically.

The first time I saw this clearly was when I was a Masters student. I had a patient with wrist pain that I could not budge! I tried everything, every herbal and acupuncture treatment I could think of and still, the pain remained unchanged. At that point I referred him to one of my teachers. I was fortunate enough to be able to observe the office visit and acupuncture treatment. She asked him a very important question which had never occurred to me to ask,“What was happening in your life when the wrist pain started?” As it turns out, the wrist pain first began right after his sister passed away. The location of the pain was on the heart meridian. This energetic pathway runs from the heart, down to the shoulder, elbow, wrist and ends at the pinky finger. No wonder my treatments were not working! I had never treated the underlying cause for his pain…heartbreak.

I saw a similar situation recently in my practice. I fit in a patient in my break because his “back went out” last night. He was in acute pain with severe muscle spasms. Now I always ask patients what was happening in their lives when the pain first started. As it turned out, just before his back began to hurt he had a spat with his girlfriend. He described her as a very unstable person. She wanted him to support her through an emotionally taxing experience and he didn’t have the energy. The load was just too great to carry. So, I treated him with points that relieve low back pain AND points that “calm the spirit”. Calm spirit points are used in Chinese medicine for different manifestations of stress. Some point treat grief while others are used for depression, anxiety, melancholy etc.

Find the association between physical and emotional pain hard to fathom? Even if you have never had musculoskeletal pain as a result of an emotional upset, I bet you have had stomach pain, loss of appetite, constipation or diarrhea after a disagreement or during times of acute stress. Perhaps you have gotten a headache or even a migraine at the end of a stressful day.

I have found that in cases of physical pain, even if there was not a precipitating event, simply having pain for a prolonged period can cause depression, fatigue and listlessness which also needs to be addressed in addition to treating the physical problem. The strength of Chinese medicine is that the whole person is taken into account when treating any disease process. The wise practitioner does not try to separate the emotional component of pain from the physical reality (i.e. the muscle spasm, tendon strain or chronic joint inflammation) Thus, emotional, physical and spiritual pain can be treated simultaneously, setting the stage for a deeper level of healing and more complete recovery.

The red eyes, runny nose, fatigue, sneezing, wheezing, itching…yup! Its that time of year again! Allergy season. For most people allergies are annoying, the common cold that won’t go away for months. But for some people, allergies are life threatening! More and more people are being diagnosed with allergy induced Asthma.

The question is, this year, what are you going to do about it?

Several patients come to me for help with their allergies. Several more come to me for other reasons, such as pain, fertility, liver health, etc. and then mention in an offhand way that yes, they suffer from allergies and have for many years. Why do we accept allergies as a necessary evil?

Over the counter or prescription medication can provide relief, however at best these just deal with the symptoms of allergies and at worse, they supress the immune system which can lead to sinus infections, respiratory infections and other problems.

Allergies are a signal telling you something is wrong. What is often very suprising to people is that treating their allergies is a key component of treating all sorts of health problems. Allergies indicate inflammation. Typically this inflammation is not just localized in the sinuses or lungs, it also shows up in other parts of the body, like joint pain, skin rashes or muscle tension and pain.

The gift of Chinese medicine is that it addresses the whole person, taking into consideration environmental and constitutional factors when treating allergies. Acupuncture, herbal formulas, nutritional supplements and dietary shifts can all reduce inflammation and get to the root cause of WHY your immune system is out of balance.

Wouldn’t it be nice to not have to take allergy medication that just suppresses obvious allergy symptoms? Make an appointment today and take control of your health!

I am frequently asked by patients if I treat cancer. Often, they are looking for help for a famly memeber or friend who has been receintly diagnosed. In California, licensed acupuncturists are not allowed under our scope of practice to treat cancer. HOWEVER, there there are several ways that acupuncture can help patients who are being treated for and recovering from cancer. Please read the following article from Acufinder to learn how Chinese medicine can benefit cancer patients.

Western cancer treatments are aggressive and cause numerous unwanted side effects as well as a lowered immune system. Acupuncture is an excellent adjunctive therapy in cancer treatments because of its ability to relieve pain, reduce side effects, accelerate recovery and improve quality of life.

What Acupuncture is used for during Cancer Treatment

Acupuncture provides a total approach to health care for people with cancer. It can be used to address many of the concerns that come up during and after chemotherapy, radiation, biological therapy and surgery.

According to the National Cancer Institute, acupuncture may cause physical responses in nerve cells, the pituitary gland, and parts of the brain. These responses can cause the body to release proteins, hormones, and brain chemicals that control a number of body functions. It is proposed that, by these actions, acupuncture affects blood pressure and body temperature, boosts immune system activity, and causes the body’s natural painkillers, such as endorphins, to be released.

Areas that acupuncture has shown the most promise include:

Nausea and Vomiting

Dry Mouth, Night Sweats and Hot Flashes

Stress, Anxiety and Fatigue

Pain Management

Increasing White Blood Cell Count

Chemo-Induced Nausea Study

Effect of Acupuncture on Chemotherapy-Induced Nausea and Vomiting

According to the National Cancer Institute, of all the investigated effects of acupuncture on cancer-related or chemotherapy-related symptoms and disorders, the positive effect of acupuncture on chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting is the most convincing.

Numerous studies have consistently shown acupuncture to be effective in the treatment of chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting as well as as postoperative and morning sickness nausea and vomiting.

A randomized placebo-controlled clinical trial investigated the effect of electro-acupuncture on chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting in 104 patients with breast cancer who were undergoing a highly emetogenic (causes vomiting) chemotherapy regimen. The patients were randomly assigned to receive low-frequency electro-acupuncture at classic acupuncture points for nausea and vomiting once daily for 5 days, minimal needling at control points with mock electro-acupuncture on the same schedule, or no adjunct needling. All patients received concurrent antiemetic drugs (prochlorperazine, lorazepam, and diphenhydramine) and high-dose chemotherapy (cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, and carmustine).

The main outcome measures were the total number of emesis (vomiting) episodes and the proportion of emesis-free days occurring during the 5-day study period. The data revealed significantly fewer emesis episodes in the electro-acupuncture treatment group compared with those in the minimal needling and drug-only control groups.

Digestive disorders range from hemorrhoids to “heart burn” to loss of appetite, and everything in between. One common Western diagnosis given to people with chronic diarrhea, constipation or abdominal pain is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). This complex disorder that afflicts up to 20% of the world’s population! You may have heard IBS be referred to as an “incurable disease” by your physician. Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine can offer a safe, effective, natural, and drug-free way to address IBS and other digestive disorders by getting to the root of the problem. My goal is to assess the entire constitution of the patient – considering physiological, psychological, and lifestyle aspects. Digestive symptoms may be triggered by stress, diet, emotional factors, hormone levels, and medications so it is important to conduct a through medical history and physical exam to discover the origin of these symptoms.

Hepatitis C is an epidemic, both in Santa Cruz County and across the country. Over five million people have hepatitis C in the United States, and approximately 200 million people are infected worldwide. This virus causes chronic liver inflammation which can scar the liver, leading to severe liver disease. Hepatitis C is also associated with a number of other syndromes like autoimmune diseases, thyroid problems, depression and type 2 diabetes.

Diabetes is a complex disease in which the body can not properly regulate its blood sugar levels. People over 40 years old with hepatitis C are four times more likely to develop type 2 diabetes. Researchers first reported the association between hepatitis C and diabetes ten years ago. Since then evidence has shown that unstable blood sugar levels lead to chronic inflammation, and chronic inflammatory states, such as hepatitis, can produce erratic blood sugar levels. Further, people with diabetes tend to have trouble with fat metabolism, which besides causing high cholesterol can lead to fat accumulation in the liver. In a person with hepatitis C, fat in the liver can trigger even more liver inflammation, causing serious liver disease.

Chinese medical literature discussing both diabetes and hepatitis dates back over one thousand years. In 752 C.E. Chinese doctor Wang Tao asserted that pancreatic dysfunction is the cause of diabetes. Herbal formulas for hepatitis date back even farther. The Shan Han Lun, which is one of the oldest Chinese medical text books, describes a number of herbal formulas for epidemics. One of these formulas, classically used for liver and gallbladder disorders, has been found by Japanese researchers to inhibit liver inflammation. Traditional Chinese medical theory views hepatitis C as a toxin that enters the blood and disturbs the harmonious interaction between organs, resulting in disrupted organ function. One of the most common relationships that hepatitis C affects is the one between the liver and the spleen-pancreas-stomach organ system. The symptoms caused by this disharmony are often experienced by people with hepatitis C: poor appetite and digestion, fatigue, depression/irritability, and poor blood sugar control.

Asian medical treatment for diabetes and hepatitis C can rebalance the relationship between these organs. Goals of treatment are reduced liver inflammation, improved blood sugar regulation and a reduction in the symptoms of both hepatitis C and diabetes. These goals can be accomplished through a broad range of modalities including acupuncture, herbal therapy, nutritional supplements and diet and lifestyle counseling.
